When seeing your registered psychologist, you are likely to be eligible for Medicare rebates under a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) from your GP.
1. Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP)
- It’s best to see your regular GP, as they know your history, but it’s not required.
- You can tell your GP the psychologist you want to see and provide my name.
- Most GPs require you to book a longer appointment to set up a MHCP, though this can vary.
- Your GP will develop a plan identifying psychological services you may need.
2. Session Fees and Rebates
- Initial session: $300 → Medicare rebate: approximately $92.75
- Ongoing sessions: $250 each → Medicare rebate: approximately $92.75
- The gap fee is the difference between your fee and the Medicare rebate.
3. Number of Sessions
- Medicare generally covers up to 10 individual sessions per calendar year.
- If more sessions are needed, we can request a Chronic Disease Management Plan from your GP, which may allow up to 4 additional sessions if you are eligible.
4. Assessments
- Medicare does not provide rebates for psychological assessments.
5. How to Claim
- You don’t need to do anything other than provide your MHCP via email or during the sign-up process.
- Ensure your bank details are up to date with Medicare so rebates can be processed back into your account.
- Private Health Insurance: Rebates may be available depending on your fund and level of cover. Please contact your health fund directly to confirm.
Important: Rebates are subject to Medicare rules and updates.
