When seeing your registered psychologist, you are likely to be eligible for Medicare rebates under a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) provided by your GP, which outlines necessary psychological services.
1. Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP)
It’s best to consult your regular GP, as they are familiar with your medical history, although this is not mandatory.
You can inform your GP about the psychologist you wish to see and mention my name.
Most GPs require you to schedule a longer appointment to establish a Mental Health Care Plan, but this may vary.
Your GP will create a plan that identifies the psychological services you might need.
2. Session Fees and Rebates
Initial session: $300 → Medicare rebate: approximately $92.75
Ongoing sessions: $250 each → Medicare rebate: approximately $92.75
The gap fee is the difference between your fee and the Medicare rebate.
3. Number of Sessions
Medicare typically covers up to 10 individual sessions per calendar year.
If additional sessions are necessary, we can request a Chronic Disease Management Plan from your GP, which may allow for up to 4 extra sessions if you qualify.
4. Assessments
Please note that Medicare does not provide rebates for psychological assessments.
5. How to Claim
You don’t need to do anything other than provide your MHCP via email or during the sign-up process.
Make sure your bank details are current with Medicare so that rebates can be processed back into your account.
Private Health Insurance: Rebates may be available depending on your fund and level of cover. Please reach out to your health fund directly to verify.
Important: Rebates are subject to Medicare rules and updates.
